What is Coaching?

Professional coaching is a transformational process that takes place during coaching conversations between a coach and client. Coaching is not counselling, advisory, mentoring or therapy. In a recent study looking at the neuroscience of coaching, researchers (Boyatzis & Jack, 2018) discovered that coaching activates the parts of our brain responsible for big-picture thinking, motivation, stress regulation, engagement and parasympathetic nervous system. When we are asked powerful open-ended questions, non-judgementally, and empowered to self-reflect, reframe and create actionable steps towards solutions and goals, it triggers a response in our brain that leads to new thoughts, solutions, and breakthroughs. Coaching is about inviting change to occur on our own terms.
